Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Coronation Street‘s Spider Nugent is violently attacked in January as his undercover mission starts to go badly wrong.
Spider has spent the past few months getting closer to extremist gang leader Griff Reynolds, who is spreading racist hatred and propaganda among the Weatherfield community.
While Spider’s choice of friend has shocked many on the Street, viewers know that he’s an undercover policeman who’s working to bring down Griff and his associates.
Spider has been forced to bide his time to gather enough evidence to secure a criminal conviction against Griff.

In scenes airing early next month, Griff orders Spider to meet him at his flat.
By this point, Griff has started to doubt Spider’s loyalty, which risks the entire undercover mission.
With bigger plans now in play, Griff starts to deliberately mislead Spider about his intentions.
Shortly afterwards, Spider gets a text message from Griff’s teenage associate Max Turner, who seemingly wants to meet him urgently.

Spider then comes face-to-face with Griff, who knocks him out cold with a crowbar.
The undercover copper is left fighting for his life, taking him out of action just as Griff is planning something big at the Weatherfield Peace Market.
Later at the hospital, Spider regains consciousness after a successful operation.
Spider’s on-off love interest Toyah Battersby promises that she’ll learn to deal with the dangers of his police job, as she can’t live without him. But will Griff ever be brought to justice?

Martin Hancock, who plays Spider, recently promised that the ITV1 soap will explore his character’s reasons for joining the police after his history as a protestor and activist.
Speaking earlier this year, Martin told Digital Spy and other media: “It’s a strange one because there comes a point where you think: ‘Can I get more done inside the system?’
“I can’t give it all away, but there’s quite a powerful backstory behind why Spider went into the police. It’s very powerful, actually. In my mind, the explanation works. Even though he’s had a few run-ins himself and hasn’t been an angel.”
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
