EastEnders star Charlie Brooks explains if Janine will return after exit

EastEnders spoilers follow.

Charlie Brooks has played Janine Butcher on EastEnders since 1999, making a number of exits from and returns to the show over the years.

Most recently, Brooks has revealed that Janine is due to leave Walford again, with her final episode to come on Boxing Day.

With many fans wondering about Brooks’ decision to leave, and whether they should expect drama-prone Janine to leave permanently or not, the actress took the time to share her thoughts on her character and future.

When asked about the joy of playing Janine, Brooks shared: “I’ve had the best year and a half getting back into Janine’s shoes. She’s so fun to play, but I also love playing all the vulnerable stuff with Janine as well.

“I’m an actress, so I want to do everything. But, yeah, it is hard. I also feel like if she was to stay in the show, the character might not be as strong somehow.”

So, by leaving, Brooks can preserve Janine’s strength and personality while at their most intense.

However, the performer hinted that this wouldn’t necessarily have to be the official curtain close for her character: “But I always say: ‘Never say never’. EastEnders is home to me, and I’ve had a fantastic time, so I’d be open to a return for sure.”

Maybe this means that Janine will be leaving (relatively) peacefully, and not meeting a fatal end on Boxing Day.

Brooks also shared how much fun she’d had working with Danny Dyer (Mick Carter, who is also due to leave) on the show, saying: “The two of us and Kellie have laughed and laughed over the last year and a half. It’s been fantastic.

“We’ve all just enjoyed working together so much. It’s been fun. I think we have brought out different sides of each other’s characters, and that’s kept it interesting for all of us.”

Knowing Janine, however she leaves the Square, it will be with a bang.

EastEnders airs on Mondays – Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
