EastEnders star Gary Hailes speaks out on Colin and Barry ending

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders star Gary Hailes has spoken out on Colin and Barry’s long-awaited happy ending.

Barry was introduced in 1986, when he and Colin became the show’s first same-sex male couple after getting together.

The pair eventually went their separate ways, but it was announced back in October that both characters would be returning for Dot Branning’s funeral.

Tonight’s (December 13) episode saw Colin, played by Lord Michael Cashman, catch up with Sharon at Dot’s wake, telling her that his husband passed away but he’s now in a relationship with someone else.

Barry then turned up at the end of the episode to collect Colin, delighting Kathy when she realised they’d found their way back to each other.

Discussing the couple’s happy ending, Barry actor Gary said: “I always thought Colin and Barry should be together.

“It’s positive and the whole idea, with Tony and Julia, was to do something that was positive and changed people’s perceptions of gay relationships and gay people. I just think it’s really positive that was the end and they do get to get back together, and that actually they did the kiss that they were never allowed to back in the ’80s.

“When I read the script, I thought it was absolutely stunning and so easy to do. It was just like slipping back into something that was so comfortable and so easy, and Michael is just a brilliant actor.”

Show boss Chris Clenshaw added: “It was scripted that they drive off into the sunset, but on the day we were shooting, it was pouring down with rain!”

EastEnders airs on Mondays-Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
