Former EastEnders star Rita Simons has discussed the legacy of her character Roxy Mitchell and her on-screen sister Ronnie (Samantha Womack).
The pair famously played the siblings for a decade before they were dramatically killed off in 2017, both drowning in a swimming pool during Ronnie’s wedding to Jack Branning.
Speaking to Sussex World about the “iconic” characters, Rita recalled having a lot of fun on the soap.

“I did ten years on EastEnders and I loved it so much,” she revealed. “We had great fun. I still speak to Sam all the time. She is my best friend and I’m still great friends with lots of people from my time on the show.
“I look back on it so fondly,” Rita continued. “It gave me so much even though I’ve been gone five years now.
“I can’t believe it but Ronnie and Roxy were such iconic figures in the show that in a way they do kind of carry on. No one will ever forget them. I get to carry the character for a long while.”

Rita recently shared her support for her on-screen sister after the latter revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer. Samantha confirmed the sad news in August following the death of Olivia Newton-John after her own fight with the disease.
“I now start my own battle with this disease and am left feeling deeply moved,” Samantha said at the time, Rita replying: “Love you forever my sis [red heart emoji]”.
