Emmerdale star Michael Parr on whether Ross Barton will return

Emmerdale star Michael Parr has revealed whether his character Ross Barton will be returning to the ITV soap.

Earlier this week, executive producer Jane Hudson teased that a mystery character could return to the show next summer.

She told Digital Spy and other press: “We are busy working on summer storylines and I always like to have a summer spectacular. So if I say that, I have to come up with something now!”

Going on to hint that a past character could make a comeback, she added: “Ooh! I can’t tell you! I can’t say! We’re working on June storylines at the minute and I thought [about a return] and thought: ‘Viewers would love that!'”

Naturally, fans are already speculating about who it might be, but Ross Barton, who was portrayed by Parr from 2013 until late 2018, is one character they can likely (but perhaps not completely) rule out.

In an interview with The Sun, Parr said: “I’ve just done a film and although I loved my time on Emmerdale I’ve no plans to go back at the moment,” before curiously adding: “Never say never but I’m trying new things which I’m really enjoying.”

The actor recently finished a stint in the stage comedy Rita, Sue and Bob Too! at St Helens Theatre Royal, 17 years after he performed there as part of the Blood Brothers cast in 2005.

Previously speaking about returning to the stage, Parr shared: “St Helens Theatre Royal is where it all began for me really – this is where I realised that I wanted to be a professional actor.

“Being back here, it really does feel like things have come full circle, it’s a wonderful feeling. I can only hope that I can inspire someone the way I was [inspired] all those years ago.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
