Chicago Med has been pulling out all the stops in season 8. It seems like every episode, there’s a massive revelation for a main character, a departure, or an introduction to a character that will be important down the line.
The storylines have been consistently entertaining, and the fall finale provided a worthy send off for both Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta). Still, One Chicago have pointed out that the show has not yet been renewed for another season. What gives?
Is Chicago Med coming back?
Firstly, let’s look at the ratings. Med has been a workhorse for NBC, netting consistent ratings for the duration of its time on the air. Deadline states that the fall ratings for the medical drama have been as strong as ever, and has even resulted in it leapfrogging Chicago PD.
Med placed number 8 out of the top 25 shows in the National Nielsen Rank, which means it was well ahead of juggernauts like Blue Bloods, Survivor, and 9-1-1. A show with numbers that strong is not going to be canceled outright.
Another reason that Med will likely stay the course and avoid cancelation is the branding power of the One Chicago lineup. The franchise has been a mainstay for NBC over the last decade, and it is a massive achievement on the part of the showrunners and producers that three of their titles will be crossing the ten-season mark (Fire and PD already have).

Removing one of them from the equation would weaken the brand, and result in a big dent being taken out of One Chicago Wednesday. NBC recently confirmed that they would be keeping the 10 pm slot (after some debate as to whether they’d give it back to local affiliates), so it seems like it would be a wasted opportunity not to maintain one of your flagship franchises.
If Med went, then the notion of a One Chicago crossover would also lose some of its momentum. It remains to be seen, but we’re confident that renewal for the Gaffney group is around the corner.
