The Big Soap Quiz crowns winner as Emmerdale and Corrie face off

Tonight (December 9) saw the cobbles and the village face off once more as The Big Soap Quiz had Emmerdale and Coronation Street go head-to-head to prove who knows the most about their soap.

Rescheduled from earlier this week, host Stephen Mulhern’s questions saw Emmerdale triumph following Coronation Street‘s win last year.

Leading the Corrie team once again was Jack P Shepherd, joined by Sally Dynevor and Ryan Russell. In Emmerdale’s corner were Nicola Wheeler and Jurell Carter, led by Mark Charnock.

Each round saw Emmerdale hold a tight lead over Coronation Street, as the actors had to answer questions about their respective soap’s storylines, identify characters from their silhouettes and rescue national treasures from their respective shows.

Jack’s team fought hard to retain their title, despite needing an extra clue in the silhouette round. “I know [it]… No, but I’m guessing,” Sally declared in her attempts to recognise Bill Ward, before the clue helped Jack realise it was the man who attempted to drown his character David in the bath.

But following the final round, things were looking bleak for team Corrie as Jack conceded they hadn’t done enough to claw back the points to win. Meanwhile, Charnock, Wheeler and Carter were left feeling confident that they’d secured the trophy.

The final score saw Emmerdale clinch victory with 26 points over Coronation Street‘s 24, making it their fifth win in the show’s history.

“I’m sorry,” Mark said during his winner’s speech. “This is lovely, we love doing this show. It’s always close but it really feels important to win it.”

Celebrating their win, the official Emmerdale account tweeted: “Sorry @itvcorrie But there could only be one winner… see you next year (We love you really!)”

Their soap rivals were gracious in defeat, responding: “We totally let them win. It’s the taking part that counts anyway, right!? We love you guys @emmerdale, it’s always a blast.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 while Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1. Both shows stream on ITVX.
